Common man has to utilise rights, powers for good governance: Omar

Jammu: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday said the "common man" has to make use of rights and powers through various legislations for facilitating good governance.

Abdullah said his government has created a platform to restrict chances of corruption and enhance public service delivery and it is now for the people to use available means to "ask questions to the government departments on every commission or omission".

"Unless the common man utilises the rights and powers granted to him through various legislations like Public Service Guarantee Act and Right to Information Act and make government functionaries answerable and punishable for delays and laxities in public service delivery or supply of information regarding their various activities, the concept of good governance would not flourish fast," he said.

"In fact, I have provided you with tools and it is your responsibility to use these to make government functionaries to deliver to your expectations creating good work culture. In this two way traffic public has to be equally sensitised and aware to make the administration accountable and transparent", the chief minister said.

On Anna Hazare, he said the Gandhian and his team were "struggling" to have a legislation in force in the country like that of PSGA which the J&K government had enacted in the state.

Abdullah was interacting with senior members of the civil society at an interaction session organised by Institute of Public Opinion.
