New Delhi: Commonwealth Games 2010 organisers have been left red faced after a dressing down by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF).

Fed up with delays, the CGF has appointed an independent committee to ensure progress on the ground.

The final verdict on the preparations came on Monday after a week of inspections by delegates from all 71 member countries as well as CGF President Mike Fennell.

"The organising committee knows and has acknowledged to us its own deficiencies. Despite being behind on the building of venues and infrastructure generally for these games we feel that the venues will be ready in time. This, however, remains a top priority because venues cannot afford any more slippage," Mike Fennell said in New Delhi on Monday.

Concerns still remain over whether the organising committee can successfully conduct the 2010 Games. Procurement, too, remains a grey area and then came the sharpest indictment with the CGF deciding on setting up an independent technical review panel.

"The CGF Executive Board has decided to establish a high-level independent technical review panel that will meet each month and monitor the progress against the promise. We will empower them to call in other technical experts as required and to liaison and engage with the CGF representatives to ensure relevant policies are put in place and implemented. It will then report openly at the end of each meeting presenting its findings to media conference to ensure that it is operating and seen to be operating transparently," said Fennell.

This was a complete show of no confidence in the Suresh Kalmadi-led organising committee. The CGF though made it clear that the Commonwealth Games would remain in Delhi.

"I have no doubt that these Games can still be great. Now every day is pivotal. Every single day is pivotal," he added.

It's not too hard to read between the lines. Fennell has said that time is enemy but can be defeated. The message is clear with CGF seems to be taking over.
