New Delhi: The National Integration Council meeting began a short while ago in New Delhi. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is chairing the meet.
On Sunday, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and other BJP ministers wrote letters to the Prime Minister on Sunday demanding to include the issue of terrorism in the meet.
To counter their charge, the UPA now says its going to focus on communal terrorism something that's best established in NDA-ruled states.
Dr Manmohan Singh has said that the incidents in Orissa, Karnataka and Assam which incite hatred in the society and are a big threat to the nation.
“The incidents in Orissa, Karnataka and Assam have pained me. There are forces in society who generate artificial hate. These forces are threatening the unity of our nation. Those responsible will be caught and firmly dealt with,” the PM said.
"There will be no compromise with terrorism. Terrorism must be dealt with firmly. In trying to counter terrorism, wring methods should not be adopetd. Any impression that any community or section are being trageted or there is some kind of profiling which is being attempted should be avoided," he added.
He has also appealed for joint efforts by all.
The UPA said it also wanted to discuss extremism and to include religious fundamentalism in the meet.
Meanwhile, activists are debating the Government's overall attitude in dealing with any form of extremism.
