Complete Sethu project asap: DMK tells Cong

CNN-IBN

Chennai: In perhaps yet another political statement that reveals the differences between the DMK and the Congress over the Sethusamudram project, the DMK's committee which met in Chennai has asked the Congress to follow coalition dharma and complete the Rs 2,400 crore project without any further delay.

Worried that the Centre may even shelve the project, the DMK's administrative committee also passed a resolution to this effect.

The resolution said, “All alliance partners must practice coalition dharma if we have to keep communal forces at bay. All the alliance partners should have the generosity shown by the DMK in political give and take.”

While the Congress feels that going ahead with the project will give the BJP advantage on the Ram Sethu issue, the DMK remains adamant.

The party's resolution comes after a meeting between DMK's Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi and Sonia Gandhi last week and it's clear that dredging the Ram Sethu for a shipping canal is also dredging deep differences between the two allies.

The focus now is on what the Centre will say when it files its affidavit in Supreme Court. It's perhaps this affidavit that would determine the fate of a project in which several hundred crores have been spent.
