Jammu: The Amarnath land row controversy is not coming to an end just yet. The talks which tried to resolve the issue seemed to have failed. Where on one end Jammu celebrated the formula the government agreed on, on the other Kashmir rejected it.

Celebrations broke out before dawn as the resolution to the Amarnath land row was announced. But only for a brief while, as minutes later the administration imposed a curfew in Jammu district and surrounding areas and Amarnath Sangrash Samiti's scheduled victory rally was cancelled.

Outside the venue over 2,000 people gathered despite the curfew and clashed with the police.

Senior police officers said the curfew was imposed since they were fearing a terror attack. Though Amarnath Sangrash Samiti said it was for different reasons.

"They wanted that the people in Kashmir should not feel hurt by the celebrations in Jammu," said Samiti convenor Leela Karan Sharma.

The compromise was reached after the Government agreed to set aside 800 kanals of forest land for exclusive use of the Amarnath shrine board during the three month Yatra period.

In Kashmir the National Conference endorsed the agreement while the PDP rejected it. Also minor violence was reported from some parts of the Valley .

"The govt has shown the urgency in the case of the Jammu issue and we hope that they show the same authority and urgency in dealing with the Kashmir issues. Weather it's the Muzzafarabad roads or withdrawal of troops from the civilian areas," PDP president Mehbooba Mufti.

The Kashmir coordination committee, an umbrella group of separatist leaders, and trade and professional bodies has rejected the compromise formula calling it a unilateral solution.

"We reject this agreement and have asked the people to observe a strike even if the curfew is relaxed. We are also fighting the detention of our leaders," says Kashmir Coordination Committee's Dr Ghulam Nabi Hubi.

Even as the people of Jammu and by and large, the leadership across the divide have reacted positively to the compromise formula, its success will depend on the reaction of the people of Kashmir. And that will be known once the curfew is lifted.
