CHENNAI: An order of the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Chengalpattu Range, imposing a punishment of compulsory retirement on a woman sub-inspector (SI) for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 1,000 for furnishing a copy of the FIR, has been upheld by the Madras High Court.
Justice D Hariparanthyaman upheld the punishment while dismissing a writ petition from A Saroja, SI, attached to an All Women Polioce Station in Tiruttani.
Saroja entered the service as directly recruited sub-inspector in February, 1981. A charge memo was issued to her on October 17, 2001 alleging that she had demanded and accepted a bribe of Rs 1,000 for furnishing a copy of an FIR to one Suresh Babu. After enquiry, the DSP submitted his report holding that the charge was established. Based on the report and the explanation given by Saroja, the DIG imposed the punishment of compulsory retirement. Challenging the same, Saroja filed the present petition. “I have no hesitation to reject the contentions raised by the senior counsel for the petitioner”, the judge said and dismissed the petition.
The proper punishment for corrupt practices was dismissal. However, taking into account the dependent family members of the petitioner, a lenient view had been taken to impose a lesser punishment of compulsory retirement. The disciplinary authority has applied his mind and decided to take a lenient view, the judge said, and dismissed the writ petition.
