Mumbai: He was 19 and one of most promising singers. Having won Star TV's Voice of India contest and indeed the hearts of many, Ishmeet Singh had it all going for him.
On Tuesday evening, the news that Ishmeet was found dead after drowning in a swimming pool in Maldives, sent shock waves across the music industry. He was in Maldives to perform at a promotional event.
“This is a major security lapse on the part of the organizers,” says uncle Charan Kamal. He adds, “We know nothing. We don’t know who was with him.”
Within a short span, Ishmeet gathered a huge fan base, something that reflects on his Orkut and Facebook page. Condolences have been pouring in ever since the news of his demise came in.
Ishmeet had just begun living his Bollywood dream. On November 24, 2007 when he was declared winner on Voice of India, he came face to face with the legendary singer he revered - Lata Mangeshkar.
The young singer had also been signed on for a few playback-singing assignments.
“He used to sing with a confidence, which is a rare quality,” says composer Lalit Sen.
His music teacher says, “I was surprised by his dedication.”
After winning the title, Ishmeet had also in January cut his first and only music album of Punjabi devotional songs.
A close friend of Ishmeet says, “God needs good people around him. I guess that is why Ishmeet was chosen to die so young.”
Remembering Ishmeet, his teacher says, “He was the head-boy so he was a brilliant student. He might not be with us but will live long in our hearts.”
