New Delhi: Delhi voted for its municipal councilors on Thursday, the results of which will be out on Saturday. And the two big national parties have much at stake.
Demolition, sealing, price rise – Delhi's ruling Congress party faces a tough challenge this municipal election.
Faced with public anger, dissidence, and the absence of Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit from campaigning, a victory will be an uphill task for the Congress.
But confidence still runs high amongst the top brass.
“Agar shabd hata dijiye. Congress ki pucca jeet hogi and the biggest reason would be the 2020 masterplan...kyun dilliwalon ki dil mein bhay tha...humne woh door kar diya hai.(If is not a question. We will win. And the reason for the victory is the 2021 master plan that helped Delhi),” said DPCC President Ram Babu Shrarma.
The BJP is equally confident. It is looking to cash in on public disillusionment with the Congress and highlighted local as well as national issues.
Enthused by victories in Punjab and Uttaranchal, the party is already eyeing the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. The MCD poll they say, is just the first step.
“Delhiites don’t give a damn about MCD elections anymore because they have lost faith in the municipal corporation. If we come to power, we are going to restore their faith in the system,” said Delhi BJP Chief Dr Harshvardhan.
What could prove the decider this election is how the numerous smaller parties and independents perform.
Regardless of which party wins, the mandate is clear – the people are now voting not for parties but for issues.
And it is an uncomfortable thing that both parties will have to look into to hold on to the seats of power in the future.
