New Delhi: The Congress is back to playing the minority card with All India Congress Committee General Secretary Digvijay Singh claiming that 2008 Batla House encounter in Delhi was fake.
Singh made the startling claim on Wednesday while visiting Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh.
In the encounter two terror suspects and Delhi Police officer MC Sharma were killed.
"What happened during the Batla House encounter was very sad. It can be seen in the photograph that one of the boys was shot in the head. It is impossible to be shot at in the head during a scuffle," claimed Singh while was meeting the families of alleged members of the Indian Mujahideen, who were arrested in connection with the Delhi serial blasts.
But Singh denied making any such comment.
He said what he meant was that five bullet shots on top of the head created a doubt in the mind of the people and therefore some political leader approached Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for an enquiry into the entire incident.
"He (Manmohan Singh) had asked Human Rights Commission to enquire into it. NHRC did the inquiry but didn't call the aggrieved party, which was unfortunate," said Singh.
The National Human Rights Commission gave a clean chit to the Delhi Police in the Batla House encounter case.
The United Progressive Alliance Government also gave gallantry awards to officers involved in the encounter.
Bharatiya Janata Party said that Singh's statement has been the ugliest manifestation of vote bank politics.
"Digvijay's statement is the ugliest manifestation of vote bank politics. Ashok Chakra was given to MC Sharma. NHRC too had looked into it. Delhi High Court and Supreme Court too dismissed it. After all this demanding an inquiry, what does Digvijay Singh mean?. This represents a diseased political mindset, it is utterly irresponsible," said Prasad.
"We want to ask Prime Minister, CHIDAMBARAM (Home Minister P Chidambaram), Sonia Gandhi that an Ashoka Chakra for Sharma and a General Secretary demanding inquiry, how can this go hand in hand? They need to clarify on all this," demanded Prasad.
