New Delhi: Under fire from the BJP and now from a group of eminent citizens for not doing enough to get back Rs 70 lakh crore of black money stashed away in Swiss banks, the Central Government has decided to hit back.
A PIL was filed on Monday seeking court's intervention to retrieve the possibly huge amount lying in Swiss bank accounts.
The Centre's counsel minced no words in telling the Supreme Court that they were suspicious of the timing of the PIL filed by the citizens.
The Government's counsel told the court, "The Central Government has been working on the issue for the last four years. It's in touch with German authorities and has retrieved information from them and it is willing to tell the Supreme Court in the next 48 hours what precisely it has already done in bringing home the money."
The petitioners continue to complain not enough has been done and believe that if retrieved, the money can solve countless problems in India.
One of the petitioners Gopal Sharman says, "India can have a tax free budget for the next 30 years and every family in the country can have Rs 3 lakh each - that is the kind of money in Swiss banks."
The Supreme Court has become a new battlefield for a proxy war between BJP and Congress on what is also a poll issue. The BJP believes that if they bank on Swiss money, rich poll dividends may come. The Congress in the meantime is taking the case seriously, intending to pay them back in their own coin.
