Mumbai: A day after two Congress leaders were caught on camera discussing massive pooling of funds for a rally by party supremo Sonia Gandhi, Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan has claimed that the dealings were all above board.

Maharashtra's Congress state president Manikrao Thakeray and leader Satish Chaturvedi were caught on camera discussing how every minister in the state has contributed Rs 10 lakh, and that Chavan has himself given Rs two crores.

An embarrassed central leadership has pulled up the state leaders for the episode but is quick to deny all allegations on camera.

"I do not have any information on this matter. We will look into the matter and do the needful," said Congress spokesperson, Manish Tiwari.

The Congress President is scheduled to visit Sevagram in Amrawati on Friday where a major rally is being organised by the party but the party is now left red faced trying to explain the conversation exposed on camera.

But Chavan said there was nothing to be ashamed of since the dealings were all above board.

“As long as the money is accountable for and is being handled properly, I do not think there should be any issue. Look at the amount of money that is spent on Dusshera rallies in Mumbai,” Chavan said.

"We have taken Rs 10 lakh from them and got flag made from it," the leaders were heard saying on camera.

"Chief Minister called up on Thursday and said that he will deposit Rs 2 crore for 2000 buses today," they said.
