New Delhi: She knows that winning the Congress over to her side would be decisive in the coming Lok Sabha elections and so despite having an alliance with the Left parties Jayalalithaa continues to reach out to the Congress party.

“The Congress must realise that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is stuck in quick sand and if it goes to help the DMK it will also be destroyed. They must break their alliance with the DMK. In the past the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and the Congress have had close friendship,” says AIADMK General Secretary J Jayalalithaa.

She knows the Sri Lankan-Tamil issue has created friction between the Congress and its Tamil Nadu allies and that is exactly why Jayalalithaa backed the Central Government on its Lanka stand.

The former chief minister hopes to win over the Congress with this issue. The Congress party has often been a decisive third force which tilts the electoral balance in favour of one of the two Dravidian parties.

In the 1970's Jayalalithaa's mentor MG Ramachandran had a close political relationship with the Congress. Jayalalithaa herself swept to power for the first time in 1991 with a Congress alliance and also in 2001.

But she openly took on Sonia Gandhi over the foreign origins issue when the Congress went with the DMK in 2004 and now 10 Janpath seems reluctant to break ties with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Karunanidhi.

Winning in Tamil Nadu which returned all the 39 seats to the UPA in 2004 is critical for the Congress. But it is perhaps even more critical for Jayalalithaa to win over the Congress in her fight against the DMK.
