Cong workers protest power cuts in Bhopal

Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Police on Wednesday arrested more than 3,000 Congress workers, who were trying to gherao (barricade) the Madhya Pradesh Assembly in Bhopal protesting power and water cuts.

The Congress workers under the leadership of state President Jeetendra Patwari, gathered at Lily Talkies square to gherao the Assembly.

During the agitation the Congress workers tried to move towards the Vidhan Sabha after removing the barricades but the scene turned ugly when the party workers started pelting stone on the policemen when the latter stopped them.

Later, police resorted mild force to disperse the agitators and confirmed the arrest of 3,500 Congress workers.

Similarly, in Indore, nine Congress workers were injured while some agitators were arrested when they tried to burn the effigy of state Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. However, they were released later.

They were protesting virginity test allegedly conducted on 151 Scheduled Caste and Tribal girls to check their eligibility for the government-sponsored 'Mukhyamantri Kanyadan Yojna' by the Shaldol district administration.
