Congress-DMK dealock resolved?

New Delhi: Even as the sulking DMK leaders held strategy meetings over allocation of ministerial berths in Chennai, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has kept the door open for the DMK. Only six of the 19 cabinet ministers who were sworn in have been given portfolios, signalling the DMK to join the government.

Son of Tamil Nadu, M K Karunanidhi M K Azhagiri said, “The PM has said that he will definitely give cabinet berth to DMK. So I presume Congress will talk to us tomorrow but nobody from Congress has contacted us.

Unlike in 2004, when the DMK had threatened to pull out on the ground that promised portfolios were not allotted, 2009 is proving to be altogether a different situation for the DMK.

It's facing a much stronger Congress which is reluctant to part with the infrastructural ministries. Karunanidhi and other party leaders had to return to Chennai empty handed. It was believed that Congress would send its general secretary Ghulam Nabi Azad to Chennai to mollify the DMK which was later denied by Azad himself.

Azad said, “We are still talking, we may not be able to meet before Tuesday ( This when asked whether DMK leaders will be sworn in on Tuesday?)

And even as efforts are on to salvage the alliance between the DMK and Congress, DMK Chief M Karunanidhi had a late night visitor on Saturday in National Security Advisor M K Narayanan.

Though it is widely believed that Narayanan briefed the Chief Minister on the latest situation in Sri Lanka, sources say that the National Security Advisor was on a political mission.
