New Delhi: As in 2004, the crucial game changer state will be Tamil Nadu which votes on Wednesday in the fifth and final phase of elections.
AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa who is expected to win by a significant margin could well decide who will be the next Prime Minister.
Traditionally, the winner of maximum Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu has played a role in forming the government at the Centre. It is little wonder then, that all the parties are aggressively wooing J Jayalalithaa. But Amma is keeping the cards close to her chest.
The NDA wants to ally with her party.
The BJP's ‘Win-Jaya’ campaign is being led by Narendra Modi. From the Congress, it is Rahul Gandhi who had openly talked about wooing Jayalalithaa.
Sonia Gandhi had to cover up for her son's statement on Jayalalithaa by doing a joint rally with Karunanidhi.
For the moment, the Congress is sticking with its current southern ally, the DMK though. The poor chemistry between Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and Jayalithaa could be a hurdle in any UPA move to win Jayalalithaa.
General Secretary of Congress Ghulam Nabi Azad said, “In TN, DMK is our ally. I am hopeful that the Congress and the DMK will sweep the elections as we did in 2004. Having done so I don’t think AIADMK will have any seats left to have an alliance with. So, we will go with our ally that is the DMK.”
The Third Front is also claiming Amma to be its own.
CPI’s General Secretary A B Bardhan said,”The great Sonia Gandhi thinks that if she sends her emissary, Jayalalithaa will be won over.”
Jayalalithaa also has one eye on coming to power in the state in Tamil Nadu.
Any support she offers for government formation at the Centre will also be guided by who is in a better position to help her in defeating Karunanidhi in the state’s Assembly Elections.
