New Delhi: The Congress appears to have realised that the going is set to be tougher for the party in the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections and, therefore, it has backtracked on its promise to provide 9 per cent quota to the Muslims under the OBC category.
An internal survey by the Congress has shown that Muslims are not supporting them to the degree the party assumed they would.
Probably, it is the double speak of the Congress on first the Batla House encounter and then the quota issue that would rob it of the goodwill generated by party general secretary Rahul Gandhi in UP.
The Muslims in Uttar Pradesh have not yet decided whether Rahul is a really serious player. And Akhilesh Yadav of Samajwadi Party is also being considered an upstart.
However, the Congress is expected to double, or probably treble its seat.
Meanwhile, the induction of Babu Singh Kushwaha seems to be working in favour of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as it is likely to get the votes from the Shakhyas, Maalis and Mauryas.
But, the party is likely to lose out on the core votes.
As far as the ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is concerned, party insiders admit that Chief Minister Mayawati is expected to get somewhere between 100-120 seats. The main factor that appears to be working against her is corruption within her party.
The assembly election in Uttar Pradesh is unique in a sense that there isn't one single factor working in favour of anyone.
