Congress can't be blamed for Babri demolition: PM

New Delhi: After defending the Congress party for ten years on Babri issue, RJD chief Lalu Yadav blamed the grand old party for the demolition of the mosque, reflecting the tension in its relations with the congress.

However, hours later, Lalu retracted from his statement and now holds Kalyan Singh responsible for the Babri incident, a view shared by the PM.

Even after almost two decades, the Babri pot continues to be stirred in the election battlefield.

Coming under fire from Lalu Yadav for not protecting the demolition of the masjid, it was the prime minister himself who led the counter attack.

Manmohan Singh said, “The Congress party certainly can’t be blamed because it believed that Kalyan Singh who had submitted whatever affidavits to the Supreme Court hoped that he would honour it, which he did not and that is the only fault that you can find of the Congress party."

The statement is aimed to take any sting out of the Yadav front that Lalu and Mulayam have formed since Mulayam has now joined hands with Kalyan, so Lalu is also being described as part of that larger club.

And almost trying to set the record straight, the congress President Sonia Gandhi went to Faizabad to show that the congress was as much in love with Lord Ram as much as it opposed the demolition.

In a battle being described as close as 2009, every vote counts. So for the PM and Sonia Gandhi, reaching out to the majority as well as minority communities is equally important.
