Rajasthan: Congress to decide who'll be CM

New Delhi: The Congress may have won a sizable lead over BJP in Rajasthan to be able to stake claim to form the assembly there. But the party is also trying to figure out who'll be the next chief minister of the state.

There are talks about the probable candidates for the post. Will it be former chief minister Ashok Gehlot or will it be Rajasthan Congress president C P Joshi. the name of Jat leader Colonel Sonaram is making the rounds too.

Gehlot appears to the most popular choice but he has reasons to be guarded.

"If you're assuming that I will be the chief minister, that's up to you. I work like this. When the observers come, the leaders will give their feedback to the high command and legislators will give their opinion. Then a decision will be taken in a manner that is acceptable to all of us," said Gehlot.

The biggest roadblock for Ashok Gehlot is the powerful Jat lobby in Rajasthan. With the general elections just round the corner, the Congress simply cannot afford to rub the Jat votebank the wrong way.

The Jats have been a longtime supporters of the Congress and have a longstanding demand of having a chief minister from their community. That's where Jat leaders like Sonaram and Sis Ram Ola come into the reckoning.

But all that does not stop the likes of CP Joshi and Girija Vyas, both from Udaipur from aspiring to be the CM.

It is now upon the three-member team appointed by the high command to come up with the right choice.
