New Delhi: The Congress on Wednesday demanded resignation of Chief Minister Narendra Modi after the Gujarat High Court censured the state government for "inaction and negligence" during the 2002 post-Godhra riots.

"After this observation of Gujarat High Court, Modi has lost all moral rights to continue as the Chief Minister. He should step down immediately.

"The High Court has very categorically said that the Gujarat government failed and did not make any attempt to control the riots due to which many people were killed and religious places vandalised," party spokesperson Rashid Alvi said.

His reaction came on a day when the Modi government was pulled up by the Gujarat High Court for "inaction and negligence" on its part during the 2002 post-Godhra riots that led to large-scale destruction of religious structures.

A division bench of acting chief Justice Bhaskar Bhattacharya and Justice JB Pardiwala made these observations, while ordering compensation for over 500 religious structures in the state.

The court was hearing a petition filed by Islamic Relief Committee of Gujarat (IRCG).

Alvi pointed out that earlier also many courts have passed "strictures" against the Modi government.
