Cong lacks consensus, Telangana put on hold

New Delhi: A day after Centre said yes to a separate Telangana, the state government faced a revolt in Andhra. Upto 100 MLAs resigned protesting Centre decision bifurcating Andhra Pradesh and Chief Minister K Rosaiah openly accepted that no decision will be taken in haste.

So after the jubilation, reality has started to sink in as not everybody is in favour of a separate Telangana.

The Congress, too, is having doubts and has backtracked. Minister of State for Defence MM Pallam Raju, who belongs to Andhra Pradesh, made a late night demand on Thursday, echoing the thoughts of Andhra and Rayalseema MPs who have been opposing Telangana.

"In the all party meeting there seemed to be a consensus which is why the government thought of the resolution. But now you see the difference of opinions. I hope government does a re-look," said Pallam Raju.

Raju's misgivings had been aired in meeting which non-Telangana MPs had with Congress trouble-shooter and Union Law Minister Veerappa Moily. At the meeting, too, the differences were loud and clear

"Lots of people are resigning. We want our interests to be taken care of," Congress MP KS Rao said.

The Congress think-tank met at Sonia Gandhi's behest with Pranab Mukherjee, A.K.Antony, Ahmed Patel and Moily studying the reports from Andhra Pradesh.

In Hyderabad, a Cabinet meeting convened by Chief Minister Rosaiah was inconclusive even though it took into account the conflicting opinions and the divergent views.

"We will not take a decision in haste," said Rosaiah.

"Final decision will be taken by High Command after meeting MPs from both sides," said Andhra Tourism Minister Geeta Reddy.

It's the spate of resignations from non-Telangana MPs that has deferred a clear decision on Telangana.

The collective decision of Congress MLAs to quit has not even met with disapproval from the High Command and now the resolution on separate Telangana has been shelved.

"The High Command will take a decision on the appropriate time to move the resolution," added Reddy.

Celebrations have long faded from the streets of Hyderabad and Telangana is likely to be pushed to the back-burner if it isn't acceptable to all.
