New Delhi: The Congress may finally blink. Senior party leaders have advised Congress leader Jagdish Tytler to take a conscience call and withdraw from the elections as he awaits court verdict in the 1984 riots case, according to sources.
Congress sources have also told CNN-IBN that the party may withdraw Tytler from the election race.
A Delhi court on Thursday is expected to give a verdict on the CBI's report clearing Tytler.
However, Tytler, who is contesting from Delhi's northeast constituency, remains defiant.
“I am awaiting the court judgment which I am told will come at 2 pm. After that I will hold a press conference at 5 pm. I believe that CBI report was in a closed envelope. How do you know that I have been given a clean chit?” Tytler said.
Meanwhile, Punjab Congress Spokesperson Sukhpal Singh Khera said, “By evening hopefully we will have some good news. There is no doubt that it is a very emotional issue. There is no harm in admitting that the issue has affected us in Punjab and wherever Sikhs are residing. There is no harm in taking corrective measures. Congress high command will definitely take the right decision.”
The issue of Tytler’s candidature became subject of a renewed controversy after a Sikh journalist, Jarnail Singh, lobbed a shoe at Home Minister P Chidambaram at a press conference on Monday to protest against the CBI clean chit to Tytler in the 1984 riots case.
The resentment triggered by Jarnail's action swept Punjab as dozens of Sikh groups held up trains at several places in the state on Wednesday, fuelling the Tytler issue anew.
