Cong may cut petrol, LPG price; BJP sees red

New Delhi: Even as the world deals with an economic slowdown, there is some good news for the India consumers.

The United Progressive Alliance Government has indicated that prices of petrol and LPG might be cut in December after the state Assembly elections get over.

Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Murli Deora has already written to Congress President Sonia Gandhi saying petrol prices can be cut by Rs 5 and domestic LPG cylinders by Rs 20. However, there is no proposal to reduce the price of diesel.

So as the Congress engages in the battle for the states, a helping hand to keep the aam aadmi vote comes from Deora.

"Prices have come down. We welcome that and it is natural that if prices come down from $147 to $50 then some thing has to be done," Deora had said on Tuesday.

But with the price cut announcement coming while Assembly elections are on in six states, has also opened the government to charges of violation of the model code of conduct by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The party has already gone to the EC citing violation of the model code of conduct.

"Now announcing that we shall do it after elections is nothing but a design to woo the voters," BJP Spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said.

Sources within the Election Commission, however, seem to be disagreeing with the BJP as according to them Deora's announcement was an economic policy declaration for the entire country while Assembly elections are on in only six states.

Faced with charges of political motive behind Deora's announcement, Congress once again played the aam aadmi card.

"For the sake of the people we are prepared to face anything," All-India Congress Committee General Secretary Veerappa Moily said.

But the point many are raising is has the announcement come too late for the state polls or too early for the General Elections.
