Congress says no to Pawar's PM ambition

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: The Congress has rejected Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar's prime ministerial ambitions with party Spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan making it clear that the post of prime minister is not vacant.

Pawar had earlier hinted that he is also in the running for the post and that the United Progressive Alliance partners, too, could have prime ministerial candidates.

However, Natarajan said the UPA prime ministerial candidate will be from the Congress.

There is no vacancy for the post of prime minister. When we win elections there will be a Congress prime minister," said Natarajan in New Delhi while replying to a question related to Pawar’s remarks.

But it seems, in Sharad Pawar's dictionary, PM stands for Parliament membership.

"I am a serious contender for Parliament membership. My party has finalised about 25-27 seats and we can go upto 30-35. Maharashtra people think if any body has capacity one should not come in his way," said Pawar whose party is in alliance with the Congress in Maharashtra for the Lok Sabha elections.

The NCP is also part of the Congress-led coalition government in Maharashtra.

Meanwhile, the candidates whose names are doing the rounds for the next prime minister of India include current Prime Minister and Congress leader Manmohan Singh, Congress President Sonia Gandhi, senior BJP leader LK Advani, BSP supremo Mayawati, NCP chief Sharad Pawar and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
