Kolkata: Asserting that the Congress should seek people's verdict before pursuing "unrealistic, anti-people" policies like FDI in retail and hiking diesel prices, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said that there would be no turning back on the decision to withdraw support from the UPA regime.
"We cannot allow FDI in retail. We cannot pursue such anti-people and unrealistic policies in the name of reforms. We will stick to our opposition and we will continue to oppose it," said Banerjee, also the West Bengal chief minister.
Urging the Congress should go for polls before pursuing policies like retail FDI and diesel price hike, she said people would give a befitting reply to those who wants to sell the country.
"We oppose such policies, which mean selling the entire country in the name of reforms. Why not let the people decide on these issues? They (Congress) should go to the people's court before pursuing anti-people policies. Because in democracy it is the masses which deliver the last verdict," said Banerjee.
She also took potshots at central government's plan of spending Rs.100 crore on advertisements to promote the achievements of the governments and the need for retail FDI.
"I will say that these advertisements will only add the anger and disappointment against the government, which will have an impact when masses will give their verdict," she said.
Miffed over twin "anti-people" decisions of diesel price hike and retail FDI, the Trinamool Congress supremo Tuesday announced that the Trinamool Congress was withdrawing support to the UPA government.
