Aizawl: Riding an anti-incumbency wave, the Congress on Monday stormed back to power in Mizoram with an absolute majority in the 40-member House after remaining in the wildnerness for 10 years.

The ruling Mizo National Front suffered one of its worst defeats managing to win only four seats with party president and two-time Chief Minister Zoramthanga biting the dust in both the constituencies he contested.

The victory of the Congress, which bagged 32 seats, was reminiscent of the huge MNF win way back in 1998.

Reacting to the defeat, Zoramthanga, who had resigned, said the anti-incumbency factor had played a key role in

his party's rout.

"What else can you expect with a party which has ruled the state for the last decade.....It is anti-incumbency," he said soon after he submitted his resignation to Governor Lt General M M Lakhera.

Triumphant former Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla, who won from two seats, said large-scale corruption and the deteriorating law and order situation were the main reasons for MNF's downfall.

"Funds meant for developmental works were misutilised. There was large-scale corruption and, thus, people have voted for a change," he said at a victory celebration in the Congress Bhavan.

The MNF government even misused funds meant for relief of famine-stricken rural farmers, he said.

The third political force in the state, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), also cut a sorry figure managing to win only four seats.
