New Delhi: The government's decision to hike petrol prices has not gone down well with the Trinamool Congress, which is facing elections in West Bengal. It has accused the UPA of not consulting it and is set to hold statewide rallies protests on Monday.
Just a day after the government decided to bite the bullet and increase petrol prices, the rumbling within has begun. Taking the lead is the UPA ally bracing itself for elections in West Bengal, the Trinamool Congress. Mamata Banerjee's party has put the onus of hike squarely on the alliance leader, the Congress party.
The Opposition, already up in arms against multiple cases of corruption surfaced in UPA-2 has got another stick to beat the government with. In an NDA rally in Mumbai, the third in its month long campaign to press for a JPC probe into 2-G scam, the alliance leaders used the occasion to berate government of fuelling inflation further.
"I feel that all the money stashed away in foreign banks. The corruption cases are all linked to the spiraling inflation,” said senior BJP leader LK Advani.
The Congress however is putting the blame on the pricing mechanism charted by previous governments.
"The mechanism was adopted and cleared by the NDA government under Atal Bihari Vajpayee,” claimed Congress leader Rajiv Shukla.
Embattled on multiple fronts, for the UPA, the hike couldn't have come at a worse time, especially when it is has found it difficult to control spiraling food inflation.
