Consequences of having a criminal record

Mumbai: It was a celebration that quickly turned into a night of shame for some Mumbai youngsters after Mumbai Police raided a plush nightclub in Juhu. Many of the youngsters arrested in the rave party even tested positive for drugs.

The police arrested 231 revellers from the site and eight of them are alleged drug peddlers. Drugs including hashish and LSD worth Rs 9 lakh were also seized from the club. On Wednesday, the police also said that 109 of the party goers have tested positive for drugs.

“We are doing all formalities, we are summoning them. We are not going to their homes and arresting them,” says DCP Narcotics cell Vishwas Nagre Patil.

The police will now arrest all those who have tested positive. If they surrender and agree to attend de addiction programmes, they could get immunity otherwise it could be up to a year in jail. But in either ways, once they are charged, their future could still be adversely affected.

Having a criminal record on your resume could be a big hurdle when applying for a job in both the public and private sector.

Those harbouring dreams of studying or working abroad could find getting a VISA or even a passport becomes next to impossible. And, such kind of criminal record could also affect the youngsters lives socially.

The police are though trying to be more liberal about this case, as they feel many of those involved are the first time offenders.

Anti rave laws in several countries are stringent and the absence of such a law in India seems to be allowing drug rackets to flourish and are misleading youngsters into a close brush with the law.
