Police have now arrested the couple both of whom are engineering students and have registered a case of murder against them.
According to the police in Jabalpur constable Shiv Prasad was mowed down by the after he allegedly caught them in a compromising position inside a car.
Shiv Prasad had gone to investigate after he saw their car parked in a suspicious manner on the Cant Road on Wednesday.
"We got a message from the control room that a new Indica had fled after hitting someone and a couple was found in this car when it was caught. They have accepted their involvement in the accident," said GS Kalra, SHO Belbag Police Station.
Despite the police claim the accused couple have claimed innocence.
"We had come from our college. We had had a fight so I was trying to plead with her when a policeman came and started shouting that we were naked. So we fled the spot. I was not involved in the accident," said the accused Atul Anand.
The accused couple are students of the Hitkarini Engineering College in Jabalpur. Police have registered a murder case against the students and they have been remanded to 15 days in judicial custody.
