Cop promoted despite sex charges

Kolkata: Sudha Roy is the third person complaining against Inspector General of Police Gaurav Dutt.

Dutt is In-charge of the Police Training School in West Bengal. He is also accused of sexually abusing his juniors at the workplace.

Sudha says her husband Kaushik Roy was his latest target. She has now turned to the West Bengal Human Rights Commission for help.

"Whenever my husband wanted to come back home or refused sexual favours, he was kicked in the stomach and even made to go through so called police training for 16 hours at a stretch," says she.

And it's not Sudha alone who's complaining.

In July 2006, Rakhi Banerjee filed a case with the Human Rights Commission against Dutt claiming he sexually abused her husband Dipankar.

The Commission had asked the Director General of Police to furnish a report within a month. Yet, not only was no action taken against Dutt, he was also promoted from DIG to the rank of IG last month.

Says Chairman Human Rights Commission, Justice Shyamal Sen, "The DGP hasn't furnished us with the report we asked for. Instead a promotion has been given to him. We have now asked the Home Secretary to look into the matter."

Six months have passed since a report was sought from the DGP. Though the Gaurav Dutt case continues to cast the upholders of law in poor light in West Bengal, a probe is still to be conducted.
