Dehradun: The six policemen involved in the alleged killing of 23-year-old MBA student Ranbir Singh in Dehradun have been booked under murder charges.
The murder charges were slapped on the policemen on Monday, just a day after Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Amit Sinha and six other policemen were suspended for their involvement in the incident.
FIR has been lodged against 14 police personnel including two deputy superintendent of police in the case.
Abhinav Kumar, an IPS officer of 1996 batch, has been made the new SSP of Dehradun.
Ranbir's father Ravindrapal Singh and other relatives have also met Uttarakhand Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhariyal Nishank to demand a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe.
Nishank has reportedly consented to the family's request but is yet to officially announce it.
"CB-CID inquiry is on in the case and in case the parents are not satisfied, we will think of CBI inquiry into the case ," said Nishank.
Ranbir, who belonged to Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh, was shot dead in Dehradun on Friday with the police alleging that he was one of the three criminals who had earlier attacked a Sub-Inspector and escaped with his service pistol.
More questions were raised after the autopsy report revealed torture signs and many bullet wounds.
Besides the main Opposition Congress, Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders and human rights activists have supported the demand of Singh's family for a CBI probe into the killing after the autopsy report.
BJP President Rajnath Singh, who is also an MP from Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh, reportedly spoke to Nishank over telephone over the issue and asked him to consider the demand for a CBI probe.
