Chandigarh: In Biana, it doesn't pay to be a policeman. Shopkeepers in the village in Karnal in Haryana have decided that they have had enough of the men in khaki sponging off them and helping themselves to wares without paying up.

The traders have resolved that none of them will sell or give anything to the police.

“They come and take stuff and don't pay and also forcefully take things, so we have boycotted them,” said a sweets shop owner, Anil.

The shopkeepers say that if one of them sells anything to a policeman, he will be boycotted in turn, and also fined Rs 500.

“All traders have decided not to give them anything even if they give money and if anyone deals with them we will boycott them too and fine Rs 500,” said Vice President, Market Association, VK Goyal

Senior officers, fearful of another incident of mob violence, say they will visit the village and try to resolve the issue.

“We will go and hear both parties and take action against the erring police officials,” said Additional Superintendent of Police, Jagat Singh Hooda.

But for now at least, these markets continue to be no-cop shops.
