Gurgaon: A nurse who worked with the prime accused in the kidney racket has said that the 'doctors' were not even qualified to conduct surgeries.
Amit Kumar and his brother Jeevan Kumar used to perform complicated surgeries even though they did not have MBBS degrees. Linda Chin Hoi, a Manipuri nurse and an associate of Amit Kumar, revealed this to the Gurgaon police during her interrogation.
“Linda used to assist them during the surgeries. Apart from that, she used to take care of the patients,” Gurgaon Joint Commission Manjit Ahlawat says.
Twenty-five-year-old Linda joined Delhi’s Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in 2006. Around the same time, she started working part time for Amit for a monthly payment of Rs 9000.
The Gurgaon police have obtained two days custody of the nurse to investigate the involvement of any other doctors in this racket, and also to ascertain the whereabouts of the alleged mastermind, Amit Kumar.
Amit’s father is, however, shocked to hear of his son's alleged involvement.
“I had no clue about his involvement in the kidney racket. I feel bad after knowing the truth,” Amit Kumar’s father Rameshwar Motisa Raut says.
The racket now seems to have been spread across eight states. The Moradabad police in UP have sent teams to Uttaranchal and Jammu and Kashmir.
They are also investigating the role of various hospitals and diagnostic labs in Delhi and the National Capital Region.
