New Delhi: There have been incidents of women who sleep in the open being attacked in Central Delhi.

Two of the five women, who were attacked under similar circumstances, have died over the last two months.

A 47-year-old nurse Sudarshana, who used to live in Baljit Nagar in Central Delhi, was brutally murdered in the wee hours of Thursday.

Shocked neighbours say she had been attacked just a month and a half back as well.

"When we got up in the morning, we saw that her head was covered with a bed sheet drenched in blood. And she was unrecognisable,” says a neighbour.

This allegedly is one of a series of such incidents in the area where women sleeping out in the open have been attacked with blunt instruments.

Serial attacks in Baljit Nagar

  • There have been at least five attacks in the area in the last two months.
  • Sudarshana was beaten to death on September 20 while sleeping in front of her house.
  • On September 19, Lalita Devi was attacked while sleeping outside her house.
  • Tara Devi was attacked on September 17 again while sleeping in the open.
  • On August 16, Sheila Devi was attacked.
  • And on August 10, Rajni was murdered.

Locals have been patrolling the area, but Sheila says she still does not feel safe.

“I felt giddy when I woke up. I don't know who hit me on the head,” says Shelia Devi.

"I am very hopeful that he would be caught soon,” adds DCP, West, Robin Hibu.

The police say it is either a psychopath or a person who has been misled by a local witch doctor.

However, for the women of Baljit Nagar it will be some time before they gather the courage to spend another night under the stars.
