Bagdi (Madhya Pradesh): In a shocking incident of police apathy in BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh, four members of a family committed suicide in Bagdi village after the state police allegedly failed to take action on a rape complaint.
While the alleged rape victim Lakshmi Bai and her two children died, her husband Mahesh is battling for his life.
Mahesh's relatives allege a local goon, Eashwar, raped Lakshmi on August 14 while she was on her way to work in the fields.
When the family approached the police to file a complaint, they were repeatedly turned away.
After two days, the police finally registered a case, but only for eve-teasing and not rape.
Subsequently, Eashwar was let out on bail and allegedly started threatening the family.
“I tried to commit suicide because no one came to my rescue. Neither the police nor the Panchayat,” says Mahesh.
However, the police have a different story to tell.
“There is a case registered for teasing. The incident was on August 14 and the report was filed on August 16. The accused is Mahesh’s relative,” says Superintendent of Police, PK Mathur.
