Surat: Head constables in Surat are taking off their uniform to preparing for duty. Instead, they are putting on the traditional kediyu and dhoti and making their way to the popular garba venues in the city.
And while these constables play the dandiya there, they don't forget their brief - keep an eye out for possible terrorists and eve teasers.
PI Umra Police Station, R S Patel says, "This way we do not get identified. Also, the cops have been trained to mingle with the people."
Elsewhere in Navsari town, Deputy Superintendant of Police, Ashwin Chauhan mingles among the garba revellers.
Obviously people have not recognised him or the other policemen in the crowd, but the participants at the venue do know that there are cops in plainclothes among them.
Garba enthusiast Akshi says, "I was scared about my safety after the blasts. But now I feel safer and it's a good thing."
Apart from being a security measure, it is also a confidence building measure for the people of a state which has seen bomb blasts and attempted terror strikes over the past few weeks.
