Cops head to school to counter cyber crime

New Delhi: They strike fear into the most dreaded criminals, but against one kind, the Delhi Police have been helpless so far — cyber criminals.

ACP Economic Offenses Wing, P K Misra says, "Two or three years ago, there were very few complaints, but now there's a flood. There's hacking, bank-related crimes, a lot of obscene calls against women."

That's why many policemen are going back to school. Delhi's Indraprastha University is training 100 police personnel in Cyber Crime and Computer Forensics.

From software basics to cyber law, from hacking, e-mail and credit card frauds to data recovery from confiscated hard disks, these men and women are getting weapons against a whole new world of crime.

Police personnel say that to keep up with cyber criminals, it is important that they update their knowledge.

Of course, the course isn't cheap.

Dean, School of Information Technology, IP University, Dr Nupur Prakash says, "The Delhi Police is paying Rs 45,000 per participant for six weeks of cyber training."

Yet, it just might be worth it. Terrorists use encrypted chat software, PC-to-PC phone calls and electronic payment options to transfer vital information and money online.

Others train recruits in the art of war through specially created websites. Online surveillance is often the only way to nab such criminals.

Cyber crime works across borders and that's why, at the other end of town, Interpol's putting the CBI and officers from four other countries through a similar grilling.

These officers will in turn equip teams back home with the latest in cyber forensics. Interested students can also continue studying online and work towards an international degree.

Interpol Consultant, Nigel Jones says, "The University of Dublin offers a MSc in Cyber Forensics online. Students who have attended this course will be able to claim educational credit and will improve their career prospects as experts in this field."

With the forces getting so tech savvy, thugs had better watch out.
