New Delhi: Clashes broke out between Sikh protestors and the police at Airoli junction near Mulund on Eastern Express highway on Saturday.
The police resorted to lathicharge and teargas to disperse Sikhs protesting the killing of a Sikh boy by Dera Sachcha Sauda sect chief Baba Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh's bodyguards on Friday.
The RAF fired teargas shells and lathicharged to disperse the protestors. This went on for nearly an hour before the situation came under control.
Earlier throughout the day there was widespread violence in several localities in Mumbai, disrupting public life.
Deputy CM RR Patil has promised action against those involved in the violence and announced a compensation of two lakh rupees for the victim's family. Meanwhile Secretary of the Mumbai Yuvak Congress Charan Singh has appealed to protesters not to disrupt public life.
Secretary of the Mumbai Yuvak Congress Charan Singh has demanded arrest of Baba Ram Rahim. “We will decide the course of action only after a meeting later in the evening, we have requested the protesters not to hamper the normal life and normal people should not be troubled. Normalcy should be maintained,” he said.
Meanwhile, Sikhs have called off their violent agitation till Monday. The agitation was called off temporarily after assurances from Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister RR Patil that strict action will be taken against those involved in the incident.
The Maharashtra government also announced Rs 2 lakh compensation for the dead boy and Rs 25,000 for those injured during Friday night’s clash between Dera followers and the Sikh community.
Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal condemned the killings of the Sikh boy and he said he was in touch with Maharastra government.
