Mumbai: The police made an appearance at the Lakme Fashion Week currently underway in Mumbai, after designer A D Singh accused one of the Fashion Week's main sponsors — Geentanjali Jewellers — of using one of his garments for their advertisements without giving any credit.

"We have called Geetanjali jewellers so many times, but they do not respond. When you call them from a private line, they pick up the phone and they laugh at me. They think they can play with the law, they feel that they can play with the Copyright Infringement Act and they feel they can play with everybody," says Singh.

From the spat between Suneet Varma and Aki Narula on a poncho in Bunty Aur Babli to accusations of Indian designers ripping off international creations, the fashion industry has seen a host of plagiarism rows.

But this is first time that things have come to such a boil and the police have been dragged into a Fashion Week.

After telling CNN-IBN that they would give a response to the allegations, Geetanjali Jewellers refused the same, saying that the controversy does not merit a response from them.

However, what is also true is that this is a very serious charge of plagiarism. Geetanjali Jeweller's hoardings — worth thousands and thousands of rupees — came up all across Mumbai and at the heart of the issue is plagiarism, something which has plagued the Indian fashion industry for many, many years now.
