Cops seek details on Channel 4 sting op

Press Trust Of India

Hyderabad: Police have requested UK-based Channel 4 television network to provide details about persons caught in a sting operation which purpotedly showed them offering to sell data from a city-based BPO company for money.

"We have requested the British TV company to disclose the identity of the company, from where the data was alleged to have been put on sale and of persons caught on camera," Superintendent of Police, CID Cyber Crime Wing, M Shivanand Reddy said on Saturday.

The CID had on Friday sent an e-mail to the London-based channel, requesting it to provide details and help it in nabbing the culprits.

"We are trying to ascertain whether the persons caught on camera offering to sell the data for a price were employees of any company or pseudo professionals," he said.

Meanwhile, the CID has released the photographs of four suspected offenders - Javed, Mushtaq Hussain, Khaleel Ibrahim Mohammed and Sharif - culled from the footage telecast by the British channel in January this year.

The sting operation, titled Dispatches, focussed on the alleged data theft in Indian BPO centres and covered Delhi, Kolkata and Hyderabad.

Based on the complaint filed by regional director of NASSCOM, Hyderabad, S V Ramachandran on October 10, the state police had registered a case, released the images of the suspects and sought information from public about them.

"We are also seeking information about the channel crew who conducted the sting operation," the SP said.
