Cops zero in on culprit in Kanyakumari hit-and-run case

Chennai: The police on Saturday claimed they have closed in on the man who had tried to run an Ambassador car over two highway engineers overseeing the demolition of an unauthorised temple in Kanyakumari last week and said they is expecting a breakthrough in the next 48 hours.

Kanyakumari SP told CNN-IBN that his team has specific leads on the prime suspect. He also said that they are coordinating with the police in other districts in their search for Senthil Kumar, who is the son of the temple priest Arjunan.

The Kanyalumari SP confirmed to CNN-IBN that it was Senthil who was driving the car.

Senthil had tried to run the car over two highway engineers — Anthony Xavier and Sundaram — on February 6 in an attempt to murder them in a shocking incident, which was captured on camera.

After the incident, he abandoned the car and escaped. The other accused in the case include the son-in-law of the temple priest and a local lawyer, who was seen in the video having a heated argument with the authorities before the incident.

Local lawyers are, however, protesting against any move to arrest him. The lawyer has reportedly got anticipatory bail. However, the police say they are taking steps to arrest him.

The two were carrying out the demolition of a part of a temple that had encroached on a highway in Kanyakumari. The demolition was being carried out on the basis of a court order.
