Kolkata: Allegations of corporal punishment continue to come from Kolkata. Two more shocking incidents of violence have been reported from two schools in the city.
In the first incident the parents of Siddharth Saha, a class 8 student of St James High School, have filed a complaint against six teachers including the principal TH Ireland and vice-principal SK Mondal alleging corporal punishment. The other teachers against whom the police complaint has been lodged include AK Talukdar, I Neogi, Ashuthava Bhowmik and N Bar.
When Siddharth's father Rajesh Saha went to the Beniapukur police station on Wednesday, police refused to file a complaint and reportedly sent him back. The formal complaint was finally lodged on Thursday.
But the school filed a counter-complaint calling Saha's allegation baseless on Friday.
"All false allegations have been built up because of the letter that has been issued. We have two to three years history of his indiciplinary behaviour. Because we were so lenient that we carried him through and he has reached this level," said Ireland.
The Saha incident is similar to the Rouvanjit Rawla case. Rouvanjit had allegedly committed suicide after he was caned by the principal of his school. He was a student of La Martiniere School for Boys.
In the second incident, 12-year-old boy Rupen Poddar died after allegedly being thrashed by his class monitor in Sarvodaya Hindi High School.
The victim's father has filed a complaint against the boy who also happened to be his son's friend and lives next door. The minor has now been charged with murder. The Poddar family claims Rupen was complaining of a stomach ache and died of internal bleeding, after he was beaten up in class on July 2.
