Chennai: This festive season you'd hear more than just the mantra's at the Prathasarathi Perumal temple in Chennai.
The announcements in the temple include a detailed circular on chikungunya. The temple authorities make announcements on crowded days on how to combat the disease.
"On days like Saturdays, when there's a lot of crowd, we tell people how they can keep water clean how they can fight chikungunya," says a temple staff at the Parthasarathy Perumal Temple, VEswaran.
A few kilometers away, at the thousand lights mosque, the same message is read out after prayers.
"A disease has no religion and it comes to people from all religions and we must help in the fight," says Chief Shia Khazi of the government of Tamil Nadu, Ghulam Mohammed Mehdi Khan.
All places of worship in Chennai are now part of the corporation's campaign against the mosquito menace. The awareness campaign is backed by regular fumigation drives and television ads.
The Government says the state has had 60,000 suspected cases reported from government hospitals and there are several thousands in private hospitals that could go unreported.
Chennai city alone has had over 1,400 suspected cases. For the moment though, the authorities say that cases of chikungunya are infact reducing.
