Couple arrested for aborting female foetus

Udaipur, Rajasthan: That female foeticide continues despite the Rajasthan government claiming stern action has been proven once again with the arrest of a couple who confessed that they had aborted a five-month-old foetus.

Vinod Verma and his wife Deva were arrested Monday in connection with the foetus found in a dustbin in Samta Nagar colony here two weeks ago.

"We arrested the couple yesterday and they have accepted the crime," a senior police official told IANS on Tuesday.

Police have registered a case under Section 315 of Indian Penal Code for trying to prevent the child being born alive or for causing it to die after birth, the official said.

The desert state has been in the news recently for the increasing cases of female foeticide, an indicator of violence against women. Its sex ratio, as per the 2001 census, is only 922 females per 1,000 males.

The Rajasthan Medical Council had barred 25 gynaecologists from practicing and three radiologists from doing sonography. However, the ban was lifted recently, much to the ire of social activists.
