Pull out troops from Lalgarh schools: court

Lalgarh, (WB): The Calcutta High Court has directed the government to vacate the joint forces from schools of Lalgarh and resume classes at the earliest.

With 22 schools in the region occupied by paramilitary troops for nearly six months now, education is among the biggest casualties.

The children were thrown out of their schools by security forces who pushed into Lalgarh in June to take on the Maoists.

For six months their studies have been at a standstill as security men used their classrooms as makeshift tents.

The Calcutta High court has come to their rescue asking the government to vacate forces from all the 22 schools by the end of the year. It may still take more time for studies to resume.

Petitioner's Counsel Debasish Banerjee said, "But the problem remains that some their equipment are still lying with the school. In terms of education of children it's completely in a standstill situation right now."

So far all demands by students and school authorities for the removal of camps have been harshly dealt with.

Now the court has even directed the government to resume mid-day meals in schools where the camps are removed.

However, with more troops pouring into this area in the last few weeks, it’s obvious education will still remain a casualty.

Despite the best of court's intentions, education would continue to suffer for another month in at least 10 schools in Lalgarh. Ahead of the school leaving exams, that might just prove costly for the students who are caught in the crossfire between joint forces and the Maoists and have already suffered enough.
