Mumbai/New Delhi: The special TADA court hearing the 1993 Mumbai blasts case was on Wednesday adjourned without pronouncing the quantum of punishment for the Memons who were convicted on Tuesday.
The court would now read out the statement pronouncing the punishment in the second half of Thursday.
Public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam urged the court that the arguments on the quantum of punishment to the convicted members of the Memon family may be held after the verdict on those who allegedly planted the bombs at different places in Mumbai was announced.
The court accepted the plea and adjourned hearing on the arguments on the quantum of punishments to the convicted Memon family members till Thursday.
Memons and their lawyers will make statements before the judge after which there would be arguments over the sentences.
The court is also expected to deliver its verdict for accused No. 9 to 13 in the blasts case in the first half of Thursday. The verdict on the remaining accused of the 22 people charged with planting bombs will be pronounced over the next few days.
Accused No 9 to 13 are the key conspirators in the Zaveri Bazaar blast that killed 17 people on March 12, 1993.
The five accused - Md Shoib Ghansar Primke, Asghar Yusuf Muquadam, Abdul Ghani Ismail Turk, Parvez Nazir Ahmed Sheikh and Bashir Ahmed Usmaan - have been charged with aiding and abetting acts of terror and disruptive activities under under Section 3 of TADA.
Public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam said on Wednesday that the court should deal with the guilty first.
“The cases of those who are in custody should be dealt with first and we have requested the court for this,” Nikam said.
The verdicts on the 22 people accused of landing of explosives will also be announced on Thursday.
