Surat: An institute in Surat is taking the dress code debate to another level. The Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT) has closed its campus to those who jog or use the institute premises for morning exercise wearing shorts.

Many like businessman Ashutosh Kanodiya couldn't believe when the security personnel at the institute campus told him, ‘you can't wear shorts to exercise within the campus.’

The management reasons the move by claiming it doesn't want to "compromise on decorum within the premises."

“Full-length trousers are okay in office, but it’s wrong to impose such a code for a morning walk. By giving flowers to those who object, I'm just trying to convince them,” he says.

The SVNIT campus is a favourite among fitness enthusiasts. But the campus regulars were caught off-guard when they were instructed by security personnel to come covered the next time.

“They can't do this. People are most comfortable in shorts while exercising,” a businessman, Manav Manan says.

However, sensing that the issue may have gone overboard, the institute is in denial mode and says no such order was issued.

“Our intention was to ensure that decorum is maintained because students and visitors to the university start arriving early,” Director of SVNIT, P D Porey says.

But whatever be the management's position, joggers who use the campus have found a way to work around this problem. In true Gandhigiri style, they are giving flowers to guards and all those who object to their exercise attire.
