New Delhi: After 10 long years, the families of the two businessmen who were shot dead mistakenly by Delhi Police officers were given justice.

Ten policemen have been held guilty for the murder of Pradip Goel and Jagjit Singh in the infamous Connaught Place shootout case. The two were shot dead while a third passenger, Tarun Preet Singh, had miraculously survived.

The Patiala House Court refused to buy the theory of "mistaken identity" floated by the police in their attempt to cover up the shootout at Connaught Place. Former ACP of Delhi Police SS Rathi has been found guilty of murdering two businessmen in cold blood.

Justice Vinod Kumar read out the sentence to a packed courtroom and reserved the sentencing for October 24.

“This has come as a huge relief for us and hope for people who are struggling to get justice,” widow of Pradeep Goel, Neema Goel said.

The 10-year-old struggle and the verdict has also brought relief to Jagit Singh’s family. It was Singh’s alleged resemblance to Western UP gangster Mohammed Yasin, which reportedly led the police to fire at the car.

“I thank the CBI, media and the judge for delivering justice. I hope the police learns from this experience and is there in future the help the common man,” Jagjit Singh’s brother Gunvant Singh said.

The court also issued notice to ballistic expert Roop Singh for lying under oath and summoned him on October 20. Roop Singh had testified that a gun, which was allegedly found in the car, was used by the victims to fire at the police party but CBI investigations proved that the gun had not been used for at least three to four months before the incident.

“Roop Singh has been summoned in Section 344 of the CrPC which means the court is prima facie satisfied that during the course of the judicial proceedings he has filed false documents or lied under oath,” Advocate at Patiala House, Saif Mehmood said.

Under section 302 the maximum punishment possible is death but that is given only in the rarest of rare cases. In this case policemen have been found guilty of cold blooded murder, now one will have to see if that is considered a rare circumstance by the court.
