CPI(M) cracks the whip on Kerala CM, to oversee polls

New Delhi: The CPI-M in a shocking and unprecedented move cracked the whip on the decade long bitter factionalism in the Kerala unit and the Central leadership is not stopping at that.

CPI-M General Secretary, Prakash Karat had suspended the duo saying: "VS Achuthanandan and Pinrayi Vijayan stand suspended from the party's politburo for indulging in factionalism."

CNN-IBN has learnt that the party will oversee organisational elections at every level -- from branch committee to the state committee. This means the party leadership will virtually play the role of the election commission.

Senior party functionaries say that punitive action will be taken against those indulging in groupism during these elections.

Observers will be deputed at every level of elections. If either of the factions are seen to influence the polls by offering party positions, the poll will stand cancelled and the area will see no representation in the organisational set up.

The party is hoping this will deter groupsim, especially in the wake of the Mallapuram Conference of 2005 -- which is still fresh in memory.

During the Mallapuram Conference, the incumbent state secretary engineered a purge of all of Achuthanandan's men from the state secretariat.

This could just be the knock out punch for Pinrayi Vijayan -- suspended under a cloud, over corruption charges.

However, this could well be good news for the beleaguered Chief Minister, who has many times admitted helplessly that he often didnt know his own government's decisions because his cabinet was made up of men who belonged to his bitter rival.
