CPI-M finds 1857 revolt a new weapon

New Delhi: This is the 150th year of the great anti-colonial uprising of 1857 and the CPI-M has come out with a special commemorative edition of their mouthpiece People's Democracy.

The CPI-M wants to focus on the revolt of 1857 because the party feels that the great anti colonial uprising of the mid nineteenth century still holds lessons for modern India.

"The parallel that you find in today's world is Saddam, with both his sons being executed and Saddam himself being hanged. So the manner in which empires functions has not changed much," said CPI-M leader Sitaram Yechuri.

So, the editor of the People's Democracy made sure he was sending out a strong political message while launching the special issue of the CPI-M mouthpiece.

"The entire world of the communal elements, is trying to whipping up this hatred and animosity is actually following the line of that infamous divide and rule policies that British have put on motion," said Yechuri.

1857 is a critical instance and CPI-M want the Government to do more.

"The Government has appointed a committee for these observations but unfortunately the committee has not have a single historian worth the name," said Yechuri.

The CPIM has made it clear that for them the 1857 uprising has a strong anti imperial and anti communal message for today's India.

The BJP and the Congress too have their own takes on the country's history. And it perhaps proof that Indian politicians take George Orwell's line of "He who controls the past controls the future" rather seriously.
