CPM the loser in Achuthanandan-Pinnarayi war

Thiruvanthapuram: It was perhaps the most awaited political decision in Kerala over the last few days.

But when the orders finally came to remove Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan from the politburo, it did nothing to ease the infighting in the Kerala camp.

The fact that Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) took no action against state secretary Pinnarayi Vijayan, chargesheeted by the Central Bureau of Investigation for graft in SNC Lavalin scam, proved to be a shocker for many, even diehard party supporters.

But disciplinary action is not new to Achuthanandan and this is the third time he has been removed from the politburo.

He has also been pulled up by the CPI-M six times in the past. But now many feel that Achuthanandan is paying the price for deviating from the party's official line, even if that means standing against corruption.

"CPI-M was having an image of an anti-corruption party. But in this corruption (SNC Lavalin scam) it was proved that even the national leadership of CPI-M is involved in corruption," said C Neelakandan, a Left thinker from Cochin.

Many say that by taking action Achuthanandan and letting Pinnarayi go scot-free, CPI-M General Secretary Prakash Karat might have only worsened the infighting in Kerala.

On the other hand the image of the grand old party of the working class has surely taken a severe beating.
